Haydn Symphony No. 49 (‘La Passione’ )
Anna Clyne Prince of Clouds
Schumann Symphony No. 3 (‘Rhenish’)
Expect high drama in Haydn’s edgy Symphony ‘La Passione’, written during the ‘Sturm und Drang’ period of the late 1760s to early 1780s, when works filled with elevated emotionalism flourished in German literature and music.
Anna Clyne’s Prince of Clouds contemplates musical lineage, the transfer of knowledge and inspiration between musicians, whether between teacher and pupil or performer and composer. Intricate Bachian textures contrast with moments of ethereal beauty.
Flowing with vibrant energy and intense emotion, Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 was inspired by the grandeur of the River Rhine and the solemnity of Cologne Cathedral.
