Nicholas Ward and his colleagues get the Beethoven 250 celebrations going early! Their Beethoven Plus series starts on October 18th at Christ Church, West Didsbury, with two contrasting middle-period quartets set off by Borodin’s wonderfully tuneful String Quartet no 2. Op 95 is Beethoven’s shortest and most dramatic quartet with startling juxtapositions of darkness and light. Op 59 no 1 is a completely different work on a grand scale – Beethoven demonstrating his huge confidence and total command of his art. The Russian theme requested by Count Rasumovsky, who commissioned the three op 59 quartets, comes in the last movement.

Christ Church has a great acoustic, good heating and a good view with the ensemble on a raised platform. Interval drinks are available and there is free parking.
