Composition project with Greater Manchester schools

In January 2019, the Northern Chamber Orchestra performed alongside pupils from schools in Greater Manchester at the RNCM concert hall.

This was the culmination of a composition project funded by Greater Manchester Higher, and was led by our Artist in Association Matthew Sharp, our composer in residence Jamie Manson, and poet Mike Garry.

About the project, Matthew Sharp said “Working with these amazingly talented young people and their extraordinary teachers was a privilege and a pleasure. As we know, resources and opportunities for adventurous, transformative music-making are under threat, so to be involved in a project that transcends all of that impoverishment and short-sightedness is uplifting.” Head of Music at St Paul’s in Wythenshawe, Tim Jackson, said “We are raising aspirations, developing teamwork, listening, composition and performance skills. The students have enjoyed the project…and it has opened many ears, and eyes, to wonderful and different kinds of music.”

The schools involved were Co-op Academy Manchester, Co-op Academy North Manchester, Manchester Health Academy and St Paul’s Catholic High School, Wythenshawe.
