Thrill of the Chase
Grieg Holberg Suite
Mozart Horn Concerto no 2 K417
Sibelius Romance in C op 42
Haydn Symphony no 36
Mozart’s Concerto, played by Naomi Atherton, demands considerable agility from the soloist. Moving from reflective, lyrical passages to a lively hunt, the thrill of the chase is captured with fanfares and the brilliant dialogue between the horn and other instruments. Sibelius’s darkly-disturbing Romance was written at the same time as his famous Violin Concerto. While no 36 is another of Haydn’s masterful symphonies, it is almost unknown. It features a lovely solo violin and cello duet in the slow movement. It’s difficult to appreciate that the rhythmically-dynamic opening of Grieg’s Holberg Suite was originally written for piano.
