Macclesfield Season: Naomi Atherton, horn

February 18, 2017

Naomi Atherton, NCO principal horn, is the soloist at Macclesfield, Sat 18 Feb

NCO’s Principal Horn, Naomi Atherton, is the soloist for the 5th concert in the Macclesfield season.  Naomi’s solo career has included appearances with the BBC Philharmonic and Ulster Orchestras.

Thrill of the Chase

Grieg Holberg Suite

Mozart Horn Concerto no 2 K417

Sibelius Romance in C op 42

Haydn Symphony no 36

Mozart’s Concerto, played by Naomi Atherton, demands considerable agility from the soloist. Moving from reflective, lyrical passages to a lively hunt, the thrill of the chase is captured with fanfares and the brilliant dialogue between the horn and other instruments. Sibelius’s darkly-disturbing Romance was written at the same time as his famous Violin Concerto. While no 36 is another of Haydn’s masterful symphonies, it is almost unknown.  It features a lovely solo violin and cello duet in the slow movement. It’s difficult to appreciate that the rhythmically-dynamic opening of Grieg’s Holberg Suite was originally written for piano.
